Research & Findings

CLIENT MEETING & CHALLENGE

After initial research, my team and I met with Dr. Piper, our client, to understand his goals. He aimed to grow his business and integrate the functionalities of three apps (Strava, MyOutcome, Jane) used by his patients. Completing this in 3 weeks was challenging.

COMPETETIVE ANALYSIS

Brainstormed a holistic approach, aligning health, community, and environment. Researched these apps and conducted surveys/interviews, finding that users, mainly females aged 35-54, valued mobility, education, and simplicity.

LIKES & DISLIKES

Mobility, education (rewarded with points), interest in local products, recycling, and charity; value simplicity, intuition, and accuracy.

A secondary interest in social and tracking features, low enthusiasm for composting, sustainable transport, & consuming less meat; minimal interest in competition.

TESTING & CONSTRAINTS

Despite client location constraints, conducted user testing to gauge instant reactions to existing apps.

Goals

Define

USER PERSONA

In the planning phase, I collaborated with the team to sort the cards and flesh out the actual data to create a persona, journey map, storyboarding, and user flow.

Introducing Maddison Campbell, a 36-year-old from North Okanagan. An enthusiast for fitness, she enjoys yoga, cycling, and hiking. Maddison faces challenges in connecting with similar individuals and seeks captivating reading materials and videos aligned with her interests.

Monashee user persona pic 1.png

STORYBOARD

Maddison, our persona, eagerly plans a biking adventure but is let down when her friends decline. Riding alone dampens her excitement and leaves her disheartened.

monashee storyboard.png

USER JOURNEY

The journey map displays the emotional ride seen on the storyboard. Aimed to empathize with user struggles and capture their reactions at various stages.

monashee journey map.png

FEATURE PRIOROTIZATION & MIND MAPPING

At this stage, the team determined the project's Minimum Viable Product (MVP), which includes essential features for early customer satisfaction and future feedback for development.

As shown in the image, there are two scales: X for effort and Y for value. Through the priority matrix chart, I identified crucial app features.

Feature Priotization

monashee graph.png

Mind Mapping

Based on research, identified nice-to-have and must-have features:

  • Education was precious and low effort.

  • Activity tracker ranked second, with the highest effort needed in 6 weeks.

  • The reward system ranked third, highly valuable with moderate effort.

  • The social component was non-essential, requiring some effort.

monashee nice to have must have.png

USER FLOW

After setting our goals and analyzing the data, I had a brainstorming session with team members to flesh out ideas for the first flow of an app. Initially, each individual had a different concept for creating a tracker. However, after defining the project's Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and considering the time constraints, we decided to proceed with a reward system that garnered interest from users and clients.

The image below shows the user flow for onboarding, activity logging, and redeeming points within the app."

Here are the changes I made:

  1. Changed "first flow" to "initial flow" for clarity.

  2. Clarified the sentence about individual concepts and the decision to proceed with the reward system.

  3. Added "(MVP)" after "Minimum Viable Product" for clarification.

  4. Reorganized and clarified the last sentence about the images and the user flow.

ONBOARDING

Maddison, our user persona needs to create an account on the Monashee Collective app. She can open the app and click the 'Start' button. Based on the two available options in the user flow, she can either proceed as an existing user and log in directly, or if she's a new user, she can sign up and create a new account by following the onboarding steps."

Changes made:

  • Changed "Suppose Maddison" to "Let's consider Maddison" for better sentence flow.

  • Added "the" before "Monashee Collective app" for proper noun usage.

  • Changed "click on the start button" to "click the 'Start' button" for conciseness.

  • Reworded the sentence about the user flow for better clarity and readability.

REWARD

Maddison can easily navigate by using the bottom toolbar to go directly onto the reward page. She can then log her favorite activity and add a reward point for the activity she performed.

monashee reward flow.png

REDEEM

To redeem the reward points, Maddison can click on the redeem button, and then she can claim the available deal for her which she earned by performing activities.

Design

I started sketching the initial prototype based on the user flow. The first sketch included the tracker, reward system, user profile, and educational and social components.

USABILITY TEST

My team and I did 8 usability tests, I found bugs and missing content by receiving feedback from users on which I reiterated to find solutions and make the experience better. Modifications based on user feedback are below:

Onboarding

Users were confused about lots of options, and while selecting topics. They weren’t sure what activity they had chosen which was also similar in the second image of a mid-fidelity wireframe. However, the outcome came after various iterations users had more topics to explore and select which you can in being hashtags which made it clearer than the first one.

Rewards System

Initially, activity lists and rewards were on a separate page by which users had to make several clicks to complete a single task. So to make it simple and easy for the users we created a Pie chart that displays the number of activities performed and also displays the rewards achieved by doing activities by the user.

Blank and Active State

Blank State: Initially, activity lists and rewards were on a separate page, and users had to make several clicks to complete a single task. So to make it simple and easy for the users we created a Pie chart that displays the number of activities performed and the rewards achieved by doing activities by the user.

Active state: On the right side, it showcases when a user is in active mode on the app “after six months”. It will then look like an active user profile where friends are added and activity log details can be seen.

Future Consideration

MACHINE LEARNING

This can utilize activity log data to personalize the educational content in the user's library.

CHALLENGES & COMMUNITY GROUP

It can also include an option to 'challenge your friends' within the group to motivate people to engage in activities. Additionally, it could serve as a platform to connect with like-minded individuals in the community.

TIERED POINT SYSTEM

Our client wanted to retain this system, which keeps a record of their patients' active time. For example, Maddison rides a bike for an hour or half an hour, and the system tracks the time.

FRAUD PROOFING

A trusted issue factor is how we can ensure that users are entering data honestly. For instance, if Maddison is donating clothes to the Salvation Army, they can provide a verification code that she can enter into the app as proof that she performed the activity and is not falsifying the information.

GEOLOCATION

Suppose Maddison went to buy organic groceries and checked in at the store, which would create awareness for that business among my friends.

REAL-TIME TRACKING

Tracking activities are performed based on specific sophisticated metrics, such as composting, cycling, and dancing.

Conclusion

The Monashee Health Collective project was an enlightening experience in exploring the health domain, covering aspects of health, social, and environmental concerns. This initiative not only aimed to enhance individual wellness but also sought to integrate community involvement through a user-friendly digital solution. Our efforts in research, design, and user engagement strategies have set a foundation for an app that could significantly impact the community's health and cohesion. The collaborative effort with the client and team members was crucial, and I am optimistic about the future development of this app, which will be handled by experienced developers as discussed.
